CEO-ECO’s Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) is a written
assessment of optometric knowledge and its clinical
application. The PLA consists of multiple-choice questions
developed by practicing optometrists related to the
competencies needed for practice in Canada (Competence).
The range of material tested and the number of questions on
specific topics are identified in the PLA
Assessment
Structure.
The PLA assists in identifying the breadth and depth
learning of optometrists trained outside of Canada and the
United States. Results from the PLA are used by the
University of Waterloo International Optometric Bridging
Program (UWIOBP) and also by the
Ordre des
Optométristes du Québec (OOQ) in conjunction with
training at the
Université du Montréal, to place individuals within
their programs, which have been established to provide
internationally trained optometrists with a structured
orientation to Canadian standards of optometric practice.
The PLA is relevant to optometrists educated and trained
outside of Canada and the United States who are interested
in Canadian practice.
