Assessment Structure

The Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) is a written program designed to demonstrate a non-North American trained optometrist’s current clinical knowledge and judgement. The PLA consists of approximately 280 multiple-choice questions related to the scope of optometric practice in Canada. While the format of the PLA resembles an examination, results are not provided on a pass or fail basis. Instead, participants are provided with a profile of their strengths and weaknesses across the scope of practice of the profession.
