The ICLO is a written program designed to demonstrate an optometrist’s current clinical knowledge and judgement. The ICLO consists of approximately 265 multiple-choice questions related to the scope of optometric practice in Canada. While the format of the ICLO resembles an examination, results are not provided on a pass or fail basis. Instead, participants are provided with a profile of their strengths and weaknesses across the scope of practice of the profession, in such areas as:

Human Biology Ocular & Visual Biology
Systemic Conditions Ocular & Disease Trauma
Radiation, Light & Optics Vision
Human Visual Development & Aging Public Health & Safety
Clinical Decision-Making & Case Management

For more specific detail regarding the ICLO assessment topics, please refer to ICLO Table of Specifications. The Competency-Based Performance Document also provides detail regarding the general abilities, competencies and the associated elements required of optometrists in Canadian practice.
