The Indicator of Current Learning in Optometry (ICLO) is a written assessment of
optometric knowledge and its clinical application. The ICLO consists of multiple-choice
questions developed by practicing optometrists in accordance with the established
architecture of knowledge and judgement that constitute professional competence
as articulated by CEO on behalf of the profession of optometry in Canada (http://www.ceo-eco.org/home_competence.asp).
The ICLO provides a
reliable indication of the current level of knowledge held by an
optometrist about current optometric clinical science and
practice.
Practicing optometrists may use results from the
ICLO for Practitioners to direct their continuing education and thereby help
ensure their continuing competence.
The ICLO for Practitioners is an assessment tool
that has been developed, based on leading Canadian practice, to provide optometrists
with insight to the areas of practice in which they are particularly adept, while
also identifying specific areas of practice in which continuing education renewal
would be beneficial. Most Canadian Optometric Regulators recognize the ICLO for
Practitioners with Continuing Education credit as it is an effective mechanism that
will encourage optometric excellence and quality practice with professional recognition
and focused learning.
