In serving its members, Canadian Examiners in Optometry
(CEO) assesses the competence of optometrists seeking
authorization to practice in Canada using the Canadian
Standard Assessment in Optometry (CSAO). Understanding
that practice competencies are different than academic
achievements, CEO designs the CSAO to test the
activities required for safe and effective optometric
practice in Canada. Optometrists from across Canada
contribute to the articulation of the essential
activities and tasks that comprise competence. This
description of competence can be found at http://www.ceo-eco.org/CBPS_Document.pdf
. The CSAO relies heavily on these competence standards
for its design and content. CEO intends to evolve the
CSAO in relation to the competencies set out in the
CBPS.
Performance results from the CSAO are a critical element used by the provincial and
territorial regulators to identify competence and substantiate the optometric licensing
decision making process.
For licensed optometrists practicing in Canada, the OT component of the CSAO is available
for Ocular Therapeutics certification (please click here for further details regarding
the CERTIFICATE OF OCULAR THERAPEUTICS(COT) assessment).
